Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy

As a school helping people prepare for post-secondary, this institution keeps its eye on the future. For their students and for themselves. Classrooms line the atrium but maximizing the campus experience required something more. Teachers wanted a place outside class for small group work that gave them line of sight on the students. A tech-savvy student body needed a place to plug in and use their devices to learn. High ceilings meant the power couldn’t come from above. The solution was DIRTT interaction rooms.

These glass breakout spaces across from the classrooms gave them what they needed. The writable surfaces made the rooms functional. And the custom build ensured the rooms tied in with building power. But the academy is thinking about the future. Modular solutions mean that new tech can be easily added to these rooms whenever its needed. And if enrollment spikes, the breakout spaces can break down to make way for more classrooms. This project won several architectural awards though, so this student-focused space might stay just the way it is.
